SPRING/SUMMER 2011
JEAN PAUL GAULTIER

the amazing Beth Ditto from Gossip opened Jean Paul Gaultier's punk revival show which took on the early 80s from the perspective of a girl like Joan Jett of the Runaways. The designer perfectly captured the moment when Hollywood Boulevard was full of girls in skintight patterned jeans and cropped blousons, Doc Martin's laceups, wild mullet hair and chokers. Beginning with 3-D print tailoring, Gaultier took on all the period's tacky swagger from denim pointy-shoulder jackets to bright red patent leather Doc Martin's which he cut out and laced in the back for a kind of sandal. The entire show was trash and flash with slashing, shirring and accordion pleats for everything from JPG's signature trench coats to jodhpurs
