SEASON OF CHANGE
Fall is a time for major transition: Will your jumpsuit make the leap with tights and booties? Is it time for the sun to set on your blond highlights and rise on red? Check out our top five hair colour trends for fall, courtesy of celebrity colourist and Clairol spokesperson Luis Pacheco, and try your hand (or strands) at something new this season.

AUBURN
Celebrity inspiration: Eva Longoria Parker Keystone Press
How to do it: “This is a flattering, rich brown with red hues,” Pacheco says. It works nicely in the fall because it can warm up a fading tan and help transition to a paler skin tone.
Who should wear it: This universally flattering shade works on all skin tones.
Who shouldn’t: “If I had to name one skin tone that should probably stay away from this trend, it’s anyone with a very cool blue or pinky [under-] tones.”
Celebrity inspiration: Jessica Alba
How to do it: “It’s easy to get this colour very, very wrong,” Pacheco says. Poorly done, the colour is obviously dark brown at the roots and blond at the tips (brown + blond = brond, get it?). He calls this brond-gone-wrong “drastic ombré”. Try to stay within the same family of hues; if your roots are dark brown, go for a sandy blond for the tips. Done right, this trend can have a really edgy twist and look very punk rock. “The kids are really into this right now. It’s part of the 1980s revival.”
Who should wear it: “Youngsters,” Pacheco stresses.
Who shouldn’t: Because of its youthful appeal, mature women should take caution when trying this one out.
Celebrity inspiration: Rachel Bilson
How to do it: “This has been my approach to colour for many years now,” he says. The beauty of a gradual degradation of colour from roots to tips is that it closely imitates your hair colour from your youth, when it was naturally highlighted and shiny. Colour should be darker at the roots with lighter tips peeking out from underneath. The overall look is soft and pretty.
Who should wear it: Everyone.
Who should wear it: Everyone.
BABY BLOND
Celebrity inspiration: Kate Moss
How to do it: Once again, this trend is reminiscent of young hair. It has a very natural quality in that it tends to be lighter on the surface with darker strands underneath, so it looks naturally bleached. It’s all part of what Pacheco calls the movement toward natural beauty.
Who should wear it: Anyone with a cool, pinky skin tone.
Who shouldn’t: Olive skin tones, since it wouldn’t look natural.
BLACK
Celebrity inspiration: Dita von Teese
How to do it: This is a very dramatic look that has been brought about thanks to runway trends and editorials. “I always think about Vidal Sassoon and those amazing structural hair cuts,” Pacheco says. It is fairly universal, especially if brunettes opt for a very dark brown instead of jet black, but as we’ve seen so many times, blondes who go dark almost always look great. The overall look is very shiny and striking.
Who should wear it: Anyone with pale, alabaster skin.
Who shouldn’t: Very warm tones should avoid it as it can make skin look dull.
