One could say that Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, better known as M.I.A., is the artist that reintroduced political activism to pop culture. The radical musician is arriving in Italy for twoexplosive concerts to promote her new album /\/\ /\ Y /\ (Maya). The record, which came out in July, was produced by heavyweights such as Diplo, Blaqstarr, Rusko and Switch. Part of the beauty of M.I.A.'s music comes from the fact that it can't be pigeonholed as it can include anything from grime and reggaeton to sophisticated new wave references.
The Tamil tigress started her career as a graphic artist and we can safely say that she is now considered a genius in the art of communication. M.I.A.'s ideas are pretty clear as far as style is concerned too: she believes that it was far cooler when musicians used to show up for photo shoots andbe photographed in the clothes they were wearing. It was much more authentic without the constant, paranoid image changes. Sorry Lady Gaga.
Recently M.I.A. caused a stir due to her querelle with the NYT's Lynn Hirschberg and the beautiful yet controversial video for her single Born Free, which was directed by Romain Gavras and featured ginger people being rounded up and executed. Her italian fans should not miss out on the opportunity. Sleigh Bells, who are signed to her label N.E.E.T. will be opening the two concerts.
