Top model Gemma Ward, 23, talks freely for the first time about her relationship with Australian actor and Oscar winner Heath Ledger, who tragically died on January 22nd 2008 for drug abuse. Heath, during his short life, was romantically linked to several famous actresses yet his most important relationship was with Michelle Williams with whom he had daughter Matilda Rose, 5.

Gemma WardAfter breaking up with Michelle in September 2007, Heath started dating Gemma in November. Gemma so far had never talked about their relationship. But today she reveals to the Sunday Herald Sun: “In these years I have taken a break from the media spotlight. After the relationship with Heath something has changed inside of me. We were both going through a hard time when we first met in New York: I had seen other men who said they were not ready to commit and were still living at home with mummy. He said it would have been nice to just be there for each other. That’s how we started seeing each other.”

They spent that Christmas together in Perth and also met each other’s families: “We were able to not be in any kind of a spotlight. We lived in a magical kind of world where we weren't intruded upon.” Gemma was 20 at the time and remembers him like this: “There was no one like him - and no one will ever be like him. And I will never forget the way he looked at Matilda. She was his whole life.”

After a hard time, Gemma is finally realizing her dream: she will make her theatrical debut right in her home town Perth with The Ugly One and we will see her soon on the big screen in the fourth episode of Pirates of the Caribbean, but she promises: “I will keep on working and will explore all options, and therefore will continue modeling”. Lucky thing.
