The black Barbie turns 30!

Posted by ElenaPearl
It's been three decades since Black Barbie strutted her way into the lives of young girls and she's still turning heads

Vogue.it sits down with Evelyn Viohl, Barbie Design's Senior Vice President, and Stacey McBride-Irby, designer of the Barbie So In Style line, to get some insight into what makes Black Barbie so fabulous

Three decades after the world was introduced to her, Black Barbie continues to reign supreme in the hearts of young girls the world over. More than a plastic incarnation of staid beauty standards, she boasts a steadfast hold as a cultural icon, captivating minds, inspiring fashion, and even provoking spirited conversation.

It is because of this that Vogue Italia chose to celebrate her with a Black Barbie issue, applauding her longevity, elegance, and versatility (she is as much couture as she is girl next door). And now, to mark her 30th birthday, Vogue.it takes a trip to the expansive Mattel headquarters in El Segundo, California, to look at the work that goes into making her the icon that she is.

Even in her different stages of construction, Barbie doesn't disappoint. From the intricate planning of her hairstyles, to the specific shades of her makeup and precise garment tailoring, she enjoys a level of attention that even the biggest diva could only dream of. Vogue.it sits down with Evelyn Viohl, Barbie Design's Senior Vice President, and Stacey McBride-Irby, designer of the Barbie So In Style line, to get some insight into what makes Black Barbie so fabulous.
