The power of the ego
Interpersonal relationships and social masks in the work of Antonia Dias Leite, an emerging artist who lives in New York and Rio de Janeiro
Video, photography and performance art come together and are combined in the art of Antonia Dias Leite. Brazilian, born in 1980, this fascinating “garota de Ipanema” completed her studies in New York, where one of the best-known contemporary Brazilian artists, Vik Muniz, presented her thesis at the School of Visual Arts.
"Photography was the first tool I used," says Dias Leite. Dias Leite’s work is rooted "in the awareness that I am an extremely egocentric person", as she herself admits candidly. Awareness of this has allowed her not only to analyse her own character and explore the roots of her identity but to observe how others behave.
