As the temperature drops and we reluctantly trade slouchy shorts for oversized sweaters, one element will happily linger on: The effortless T-shirt is going to remain a wardrobe staple. Nothing beats a wear-it-every-which-way tee, and Pringle of Scotland just released two styles that definitely fall into that category. Pringle commissioned the renowned Glasgow-based illustrator David Shrigleyto design some pop-art like tees because they wanted a connection to the brand’s Caledonian heritage—in particular, the eightieth birthday of the twinset, that iconic Pringle invention. Shrigley was delighted to be asked, though a little surprised. He doesn’t claim to be a style aficionado. “Everything I know about fashion,” he says, laughing, “I learned from watching Ugly Betty.” Well, call it beginner’s luck then. In a saturated palette of ruby, emerald, charcoal, and white, Shrigley’s flurry of cartoonish sketches and scribbles are fantastic fun, drawing on his trademark quirky characters and sly humor. The Naked People tee, for example, depicts a cluster of nude figures with their arms outstretched toward a suspended twinset. According to Pringle’s creative director, Clare Waight Keller, it is, she says, “a humorous take on fashion’s obsession with the next best thing. It visualized the craving for the must-have item.”   And with the arrival of fall, Keller offers plenty of ways to take this tee from a relaxed day look (think cashmere jersey cardigans, men’s tailored trousers, and weathered ankle boots) into the evening (twisted-cable handknits with fox-tail trim, brushed-flannel skirts, and fabulous Georgina Goodman booties).    David Shrigley for Pringle of Scotland “Naked People” and “This Is For You” T-shirts (above), $125 each, available at Net-A-Porter; netaporter.com.
