THE MOCA GRAND ANNUAL EVENT!!
A tent on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles was illuminated with the white lights of an old Hollywood marquee on Saturday night. The reason? The Museum of Contemporary Art’s Annual Gala. Kirsten Dunst, ChloĆ« Sevigny, and Ginnifer Goodwin came out for the fete celebrating the West Coast art world. Guests previewed “The Artist’s Museum,” an exhibition featuring 146 L.A.-based artists, many of whom—Ed Ruscha, Catherine Opie, and John Baldessari—then joined China Chow, Gwen Stefani, and honorary gala chairDasha Zhukova inside the tent for dinner. MOCA director and New York transplantJeffrey Deitch marveled, “Los Angeles feels like the most exciting place in the world for contemporary art.” Local artist Doug Aitken seemed to agree. He created a living artwork titled WE for the occasion, celebrating the legacy of the West—complete with live drummers, singing auctioneers, and a heart-racing whip demonstration by a real-life cowboy. Watching her friends and L.A. musicians Devendra Banhart and Beck along with Caetano Velosoonstage, Rodarte designer and Pasadena native Laura Mulleavy gushed, “It’s amazing. I know every single person who performed!” MOCA trustee and art patron Eli Broad, who has chosen a spot on Grand just across the street from MOCA for his own museum (slated to open in 2012), promised, “The best is yet to come."
