PROJECT PAZ

“I’m really taken by the amazingness of it all!” said Leighton Meester—in a Marchesa dress and Nicholas Kirkwood shoes—about the surprise unveiling of the Hope Diamond (complete with its new setting) at Harry Winston last night. Halle Berry and Harry Winston President and CEO Frédéric de Narp hosted the viewing, which kicks off the “Court of Jewels” exhibition, and the intimate post-party. “Every girl loves diamonds,” said Berry—channeling the solitaire’s original best friend, Marilyn, in a black Dolce & Gabbana strapless—of her affection for the megawatt stone. The storied deep-blue jewel, which was originally discovered in India and has changed hands many times over its 350-year history (owners include Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette, George IV, the Hope family, and socialite Evalyn Walsh McLean), its rumored curse, and its brand-new look drew many oohs and ahs and the inevitable Titanic references during the course of the showing. Applause broke out when de Narp announced that Harry Winston will donate 5% of pre-tax profits to support education programs worldwide. After inspecting the carat, cut, color, and clarity and decamping to Monkey Bar for the dinner portion of the evening, Meester balked when the gem’s negative energy was brought up. “I don’t believe in that kind of stuff!” But Berry had a more open-minded take, saying, “I definitely believe in bad karma. But I think the Hope Diamond’s juju is going to be erased now that it’s being associated with something good."
Meanwhile, trips to Las Vegas, Mustique, Casa de Campo, and a private tennis lesson withJohn McEnroe were all on the table and up for grabs at the Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s Associates Committee fall gala at the Four Season in New York last night. Dree Hemingway, Byrdie Bell, and Dr. Lisa Airan were on hand for the private auction, which raises funds for the Pediatric Family Housing Endowment.
And downtown on Jane Street, New Yorkers took shelter from the rain at Project Paz’s fete to promote peace in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. The event featured a silent auction of artwork on display throughout the venue and a selection of fashion pieces donated by designers likeAlejandro Ingelmo, Ivanka Trump, Carolina Herrera, and Thakoon. Petra Nemcova, Eddie Borgo, and members of the host committee, including Christian Cota,Vogue’Sylvana Ward Durrett, Amanda Hearst, and Carolina Herrera De Baez, came together for a night revelry set to the sounds of My Best French.
