It's all in the eyes. All you need to do is look at the person whose love you want to conquer the right way, and you have eight times the chances of success. Even Cleopatra knew this, going to great lengths to take good care of her eyebrows.
There wasn't really any need to conduct a scientific research study.
We all knew it already, having learned it at our own expense, over years of encounters, successful and failed. But now we have the proof: the eyes are the secret to seduction.
It's written in a study published by the Acts of the Royal Society, Biological Sciences, conducted on a sample of 460 people, half men and half women.
The findings: the effects of the direction of our gaze can make us appear up to eight times more attractive, especially in combination with a sunny smile. As if to say, if you want to conquer a man or woman you must look him/her in the eye, and your eyes must convey your interest and appreciation.
That's why, according to Dr. Ben Jones, director of the Face Research Laboratory, men are most attracted by women who use eyeliner to accentuate characteristics such as the size of their eyes.
Make-up plays an essential role. Not to speak of the eyebrows, traditionally considered an area with a high erotic impact.
Nefertiti coloured them with charcoal, Cleopatra shaved them, the Venetian courtesans perfumed them with jasmine and Marlene Dietrich wore them arched. Madonna wore the shaggiest eyebrows, in her Like a Virgin incarnation.
These days, it's no longer enough just to go to the beautician.
To obtain perfectly shaped eyebrows, make an appointment at the Brow Bar (under Sephora), a corner dedicated exclusively to eye design which can even brighten up your features with a lifting effect.
If you prefer to do it yourself, go to eyebrowz.com to choose between 80 or so stencils for designing your own eyebrow shape with a special pencil. The long-lasting alternative is a form of semi-permanent make-up which gradually biodegrades over time.
And, last but not least, the lashes are essential for adding depth to the eyes.
The must-haves are XL volume and feline length. The fact that Italians know this well is demonstrated by the upward trend on the mascara market and the increase in the number of ladies who wear fake eyelashes, whether in the exaggerate style of Shu Uemura or for everyday wear like those by Mac.
The latest new trick?
In London they have no doubts about it: the secret to perfect eyelashes is a treatment like the permanents we have done on our hair.
