A genuine revolution seems on the cards in the UK. The politician Keith Vaz has asked the House of Commons to review the procedure for succession to the throne of England. This was signed into law 300 years ago and many think it is now out of date and sexist. If the law were changed, any heirs to the crown born from William and Kate’s forthcoming marriage would all have equal rights, ending sex discrimination. A perfect wedding present, then, especially as it would be supported by the British people, as newspapers surveys have shown.
The current system in force always favors male heirs to the throne, even if they are younger. Since sex discrimination has been illegal in the UK since 1975, “the union between William and Kate, a young, modern couple, could help create a legal change that is often discussed but has never been approved,” as Vaz has said. But what do Charles and William think of it? Well, there’s no risk for them, since neither has an older sister who could jump over them in the succession to the throne. Any change, however, would take a long time to put in place – according to the office of the Prime Minister, David Cameron – since it would have to be approved in all 16 countries of the Commonwealth where Queen Elizabeth II is head of state. But for now it is clear that if in the future Kate has a little girl, all the crown’s subjects are ready to sing God Save the Queen.
